Let me know your favourite shortcuts for Windows Mobile…

Screen Resolutions

Everyone measures computer screens in inches but what really counts is the native screen resolution.

A good computer can be really let down by a poor quality screen so I like to keep track of all my screen sizes.

SE Xperia X1 3.0 inch 480 x 800 Great resolution for a mobile phone but sometimes everything can be just too small.
Dell Inspiron 1720 Notebook 17 inch 1920 x 1200 Great resolution for a notebook.
Samsung SyncMaster 2343nw LCD 23 inch 2048 X 1152 Superior resolution in a 23 inch LCD
Compaq nc6400 Notebook   1280 x 800 Not enough resolution to be useful.
IBM Think Pad   1400 x 1050 Useful resolution for a notebook.

Posting using Windows Live Writer

This post was created using Windows Live Writer from Windows Server 2003 and then edited from Vista. Windows Live Writer is not supported on Windows Server 2003 so I had to locate an installer on from another blog.

Windows Live Writer appears to be a very pleasant application and much easier to use then FrontPage and even the template add-in in Word 2007.

A major advantage of Windows Live Writer is that images can be cut and pasted onto the page and when published are uploaded to storage space on blogger so there is no need for me to have my own FTP space.

Blogger labels are supported and they can be added as categories.

If only Windows Live Writer would work on Windows Mobile…

Does it work?

Lets see…

My X1 Xperia Must HaveApplications

This is my must have list of applications and utilities for my Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia...

Shell

Spb Mobile Shell 3.0

I am not big fan of panels because of the delay what switching but this is a very nice shell which extends the regular Today panel. It has a number of screens and some nice animations and the layout is more fat finger friendly for one handed use so it may actually be possible to make and receive calls without using the stylus.

Applications

Opera Mini

I like this browser for the way it renders the web page layout and for its RSS feeds. Note that Opera Mini is a entirely distinct application to Opera for Mobiles which comes pre-installed.

Google Maps

Download the latest version which includes real time traffic and street view.

Sky For Mobiles

No not a web browser interface but an actual application which shows Sky TV listings and allows you to set your Sky+ to record.

Terminal Services Client

TSC should be standard with Windows Mobile but not included with my Vodafone branded phone. Providing the correct firewall ports are open on my network I can take remote control of my computers from anywhere in the world. A drawback is that the remote control only runs full-screen on the Xperia X1 so it is 480 x 800 with no scrolling.

Active Sync

I run an Exchange server so Active Sync is invaluable for keeping me up to date with my email, calendar, contacts and tasks.

Utilities

No Data

Turn data connections on and off. Very useful if you want to force an application like Internet Explorer to use WiFi etc.

My Mobiler

Remote control your Windows Mobile from your PC (over USB) and very easy to save screen shots to your PC.

Total Commander

Very powerful file system explorer.

PHM Regedit

Edit the Win Mobile registry.

Xperia Tweak

Some useful registry edits for the SE X1 Xperia including "Disable screen turning off during calls".

Fun

Air Horn

Well it gets a laugh in my office.

Sky Mobile on Windows Mobile!

Sky Mobile is a java app which shows Sky TV listings on your mobile and once you have registered your mobile phone number with Sky allows you to set your Sky+ to record.

Sky Mobile needs the TNT JBED 24052007.cab java platform which means that it is not easy to get Sky Mobile working on the X1 Xperia.

Sky Mobile Installation Instructions

  1. Make sure that no java platform or application is running.
  2. Install TNT JBED 24052007.cab to the storage card. Note that the Program menu will now contain a new Java icon. It is a good idea to rename the new icon to TNT Java to avoid confusion with the regular Java.
  3. Make sure that no java platform or application is running and start TNT Java. Note that the splash screen is different to the regular Java.
  4. Click Menu -> Install -> Local Files and select SkyMobile_SonyWithoutTv
  5. To run Sky Mobile start TNT Java and click Sky by Mobile

Using Sky Mobile

Use the X1 optical joystick to select Username in yellow and press the optical joystick button and use the X1 keyboard to enter the username and password that you registered on the Sky website.

Sky Mobile is not touch screen compatible so use the up/down buttons on the X1 optical joystick to select menu items. Sometimes an item can be selected by pressing the optical joystick button and other times you have to press the bottom left and right custom keys. The left custom button usually performs an action and the right custom button cancels.

To exit Sky Mobile you need to find a screen where you can select Home using the bottom left custom key. Then select Options. Then scroll down to Log Out and press the optical joystick button.

Managing Java

Having 2 java platforms installed can be problematic. For best results always completely close all running Java applications before launching a new java application and avoid installing the same application in more than one Java environment.

Screen Resolution

The incredible SE X1 Xperia WVGA screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels causes the Sky Mobile screens to appear really tiny. I am now desperately searching for a utility to reduce the screen resolution while I run Sky Mobile.

Hello World Using Google Docs

Hello World

This entry created and published using Google Docs.

Convert line breaks is not working which is causing double line spacing - need to use the line break <shift><cr> instead of the hard <cr>

Images are supported but no cut and paste so I have to save the file to my hard drive and then upload the file to Google Docs.

There is the benefit that image is then hosted on Google Docs and I don't have to use my external FTP server to host images.

The editor is a bit flaky and I'm getting lots of scripting errors.

actual.myzen.co.uk

I have changed the picture options on the Word 2007 blogging template to use my FTP hosting space actual.myzen.co.uk

Now I can cut and paste an image into Word 2007 and when I publish the post to my blog it is automatically copied to my FTP space.

It would be even better if images could be hosted on blogspot…
