The Great Laser Printer Toner Scam

I love my Xerox Phaser 6139N laser printer, it is a great printer and cost under £200 but one small problem is that a new set of 4 toners costs £272.00 !!!

Earlier today my Xerox Phaser 6139N said that it had run out of magenta toner so naturally I put in new cartridge. I was just about to throw the old one away but I decided that the bright pink powder warranted a closer inspection so I emptied out the remaining toner onto the table and to be honest I think it was good for a fair few extra pages.

P1000992

This is how much toner was left from an EMPTY toner cartridge.

I then decided to do some more detective work and I actually weighed the empty toner cartridge and compared the weight with a full toner cartridge.

P1000998
Full toner cartridge weighs 87 grams.

P1000995
Empty toner cartridge weighs 72 grams.

Each toner cartridge contains 15 grams of toner.

The cost of toner is £4.60 per gram.

For comparison the cost of gold at todays price is £30.54 per gram.

Take screenshots of your Android phone (without root)

You don't have to root your Android phone to take screenshots.

Install Android SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

Install USB Sync on your PC (The software that came with your phone).

image
Use USB to connect your phone to your PC and turn on Sync.

image
Go to Settings, Applications, Development and turn on USB debugging.

image
From the Android SDK run Dalvik Debug Monitor (DDM) by double clicking "C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\tools\ddms.bat"

DDM will “find” your phone.

image
In DDM click Device, Screen capture…

You can now save your screenshot to your PC.

These examples use my HTC Desire HD.

I'm actually testing if it's possible to upload pictures which can then be viewed in a web forum.

Remove Favorites Bar Folder in IE8

This solution uses the Group Policy Editor.

Close all instances of IExplorer.
Go to Start > Run and type in gpedit.msc
Go to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer
Doubleclick Turn off Favorites bar and click Enabled

- Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
- In the command console type gpupdate /force

Open IE8 you will find the Favorites bar in the toolbar greyed out and Add to Favorites bar is no longer present in the Favorites menu.

You can delete the Favorites bar, it will not return. Ever.

Surround Sound Confessions

Widescreen Era

Started with 10 year old Sony 32” CRT with old grey plastic TV stand and Sky+ Satellite Receiver and JVC DVD Player. Located in corner of room.

Purchased Xbox 360 Elite to play games but had poor quality and sound with Sony 32” CRT.

No space in old grey plastic TV stand for Xbox 360.

Start of High Definition Era

Purchased Toshiba REGZA 42RV635DB 42” Full HD 1080p LCD TV priced £799.00 from Tesco with free Sky+HD digibox, free installation and a £50 Tesco grocery voucher.

Watched standard Sky+ on the 42” LCD TV until the Sky+HD install date.

Also purchased glass shelf console unit from Tesco (delivered Sat 01/08/2009).

Sky+HD installed on Sun 02/08/2009

Attached PC speakers using the headphone socket on the 42” LCD TV for improved sound.

Purchased Onkyo TX-SR507 AV Receiver and Onkyo SKS-HT528 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer.

Positioned central and side speakers on glass shelf with surround sound speakers on the floor in the corner of the room.

Liked Onkyo TX-SR507 AV Receiver so much so I upgraded to Onkyo TX-SR607 AV Receiver with 6 HDMI inputs including a Game port, HDMI up scaling (which I don’t use) and on-screen menu.

Relocate TV

Film Reviews

Quantum of Solace
8/10
Had difficulty following who the bad guys were. Storyline not as good as Casino Royale.

Max Payne
3/10
Linear story line like the game.

Starship Troopers 2
2/10
Flat story filmed mainly in the dark to save costs

The Reader
4/10
A sense of duty to watch it to the end. Predictable and ultimately a loss of 2 hours from my life.

The Day The Earth Stood Still
6/10
How to spoil a classic…
No massive spaceship, just a bright sphere.
Gort is not a real robot and turns into cloud of flies.
Hardly a mention of “Klaatu barada nikto”

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2
1/10
The original was watchable but this was not.

Valkyrie
8/10
Excellent Tom Cruise film showing the American version of history.

Body of Lies
7/10
Good plot and characterisation. Very watchable.

Bedtime Stories
6/10
Walt Disney for kids and no sex but Adam Sandler is great.
